Oats&Berries Breakfast SmoothieIf you have ever found yourself simultaneously scrambling to get out the door while also racking your brain for what you are going to eat on the way out that door, look no further. This Oats&Berries Breakfast Smoothie has everything you need to start your day on the right foot and it’s also delicious while being quick and easy to make.

I have found this to be a great option on those mornings that seem to run out of time before they even start. Those days where the kids refuse to put their shoes and socks on though you’ve asked a gazillion times, your hair is not drying as fast as it normally does, you forgot to pack lunch the night before and the dog is pestering you for yet another “potty trip” outside. Sound familiar? Yea, we’ve all been there. This smoothie was developed out of necessity more so that anything else and is now a go-to breakfast option for the whole family. This recipe has oats to give you energy to power through your morning, berries to boost your day with vitamins and minerals and protein to help make it a complete meal.

In our house, we have chosen to use a specific time of protein that we love from a company called Onnit. These guys are doing all kinds of unconventional thing in the fitness world and creating delicious, sustainable and nutrient packed foods to go with it. Oats&Berries Breakfast SmoothieWHY you should give it a try:

Oats:

  • Oats are probably best known for being very high in fiber which is great for many reasons. Fiber helps lower cholesterol, reduces blood sugar and since it is slowly digested, it helps to keep you fuller longer which will in turn help to reduce your calorie consumption for the day.
  • Oats contain both soluble and insoluble fiber. The insoluble fiber absorbs liquid making stools heavier and speeds their passage through the gut, relieving constipation.
  • These grains are also a great source of carbohydrates that provide calories for quick energy use making them the perfect food to start your day on the right foot!

Strawberries:

  • Vitamin C protects cells from cancer-causing chemicals. It is also anti-inflammatory which is helpful in curing osteoarthritis, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis to name a few. Not to mention vitamin C is also vital for the proper function of a healthy immune system.
  • Strawberries are also very well known for the promotion of eye health. The antioxidant properties of this berry are beneficial in the prevention of cataracts, while the vitamin C is great for strengthening the eye’s cornea and retina.
  • The flavonoids and antioxidants in strawberries, primarily those from the phytonutrients present, have been proven to help combat many cancers and help to lower cholesterol.

Onnit Hemp Force Vanilla-Acai Protein:

  •  This delicious protein mix contains hemp protein, flax seeds, chai seeds, acai berry and is naturally sweetened with stevia.
  • The protein isolated from hemp contains a unique mixture of two proteins, edestin and albumin. Edestin is a globular protein found only in hemp and contains a higher content of essential amino acids compared to soy protein and albumin is important to prevent the weakening and fatigue of muscles.

WHERE to get the goods:

  • Oats are an ingredients that we buy in bulk and have on hand at all times. Try gluten free oats for those with allergies and if you don’t have a bulk section at your local super market, Bob’s Red Mill is a great brand.
  • Strawberries are in season in the springtime and they can be found at your local market or farmers market. I would avoid purchasing fresh strawberries out of season for many reasons so try a frozen berry instead.
  • Onnit Hemp Force is for sale at onnit.com.

HOW to enjoy it:

  • This smoothie is a great way to start your day. Simply keep all of the ingredients prepped in yourpantry and throw them in a blender for a quick and easy breakfast on your way out the door.
  • Also makes a wonderful post workout shake to replenish your tired muscles and keep you going.
  • Great for people of all ages; my daughters love this for breakfast.

So next time you are searching for a quick, healthy breakfast on the go, give this one a try and I promise your stress levels, body and mind will be happy.

Notes
  1. *If fresh strawberries are not available or out of season, frozen berries will work the same but you may need to add more water depending on how thick you like your smoothies.
  2. ** My husband likes his smoothies very cold so I tend to add more when I make this for him. If you like yours the same way, try adding an extra 1/2 cup of ice.
