Peach Pie SmoothieThis smoothie recipe has been my go-to for the past few weeks for a few reasons; it’s PEACH season(!), this dog-day heat has me running to smoothies for relief and I’m trying to cut back on desserts so this treat helps curb the cravings. Healthy- refreshing- sweet treat. Win-win-win.

WHY you should give it a try:

Peaches

  • Peaches contain a good amount of vitamin C which helps in maintaining healthy skin and also provides a defense against harmful free radicals and infections.
  • Peaches possess significant antioxidant properties. The presence of antioxidants such as lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-crytoxanthin help in scavenging the oxygen-derived free radicals and protect the body against the harmful effects of various diseases.
  • The presence of magnesium in peaches helps to prevent stress and anxiety in the body and aids in keeping the nervous system calm.

Bananas

  • The health benefits for bananas is impressive and extensive, here are a few key benefits I found to be worth mentioning.
  • The high levels of B6 in bananas help to reduce swelling, protect against type II diabetes, aid weight loss, strengthen the nervous system, and help with the production of white blood cells.
  • Since bananas are high in potassium and low in salt, they are officially recognized by the FDA as being able to lower blood pressure and protect against heart attack and stroke.
  • They help overcome depression thanks to the high levels of tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin- the happy-mood brain neurotransmitter. Also helps to relieve Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Peanut Butter

  • Peanuts have only unsaturated fats so they can be consumed regularly. 
  • High protein
  • They are full of vitamins as well. Vitamin A for eyesight, vitamin C for immune function and vitamin E which helps dissolve fat blockages in the arteries. 
  • You will also find a number of antioxidants, one known as resveratrol is good for lowering cardiovascular disease and cancer risk, and also reduces inflammation.

WHERE to get the goods:

  • Peaches are a summer stone fruit and can be found at farmers markets towards the end of summer and into early fall.
  • Bananas and peanut butter are an easy find year round (and a staple in my house as well).

HOW to enjoy it:

  • The addition of protein powder not only adds great flavor to this recipe but it also helps to make this smoothie a complete meal that can be eaten for breakfast or after a workout to refuel. 
  • I personally enjoy this as an evening snack in place of real peach pie for half the sugar and all the flavor.

Ingredients
  1. 1 1/2 cups almond milk
  2. 2 peaches, halved and pitted
  3. 1 banana
  4. 1 scoop vanilla protein of choice
  5. 1/4 cup pecans
  6. 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  7. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  8. 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  9. 1 1/2- 2 cups ice
Instructions
  1. Add ingredients except ice to high speed blender and blend until combined.
  2. Add ice and blend until frothy.
  3. Enjoy immediately.
